The Commonwealth Secretary-General Rt. Hon Patricia Scotland paid her first official visit to Botswana from 3rd to 8th July 2021, arriving from Zambia on 3rd July, for official meetings with several government departments.
The Centre was among the institutions that she visited. She was welcomed by the Deputy Director General Operations of the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime Ms. Priscilla Israel on behalf of the Director General who is the Chairperson of the Advisory Board of the Centre. Ms. Israel briefed the SG on the Centre’s progress, challenges and successes. When giving her remarks, the Commonwealth Secretary-General said corruption is not a victimless crime and that it deprives the opportunity to provide services with the resources. She said the Centre is emblematic of the fight against corruption, and that what the Centre does directly impacts on the work of the Commonwealth. She therefore commended the Centre staff on the work that they are doing in the fight against corruption, and encouraged them to do more despite the challenges with funding. She commended the Centre for moving with the times and offering relevant courses like asset recovery and block-chain technologies. She reiterated the Commonwealth’s support to the Centre.
Dr. Roger Koranteng who was part of the Secretary General’s delegation added his voice to the Centre’s success and commended the Centre staff for their commitment. At the end the SG was taken on a tour of the Centre offices and training facilities.
